Some massive recent crowd-sourced projects have been the Veronica Mars movie - funded entirely by fans; Amanda Palmer's latest album; Zach Braff's follow up to Garden State (less successful was Melissa Joan Hart's attempt to fund Darci's Walk of Shame... I just wish that video were still alive. It was amazing).
I love it because it's totally in the BINORACLE spirit - it's non-commercial and it's all about a free exchange. I love your project so I give you £10; in return you'll give me a reward and the sense of achievement of having helped an awesome project off the ground. People who share values and hobbies are able to connect through the great democratiser of the internet, bypassing corporations and marketing and other such tat.
My friend Jess is currently running an ambitious Kickstarter fund for an awesome independent theatre company called Root Experience - it's a theatre/live action game where you are the main character, running around your city like a spy with interaction from actors and via your phone. Check it out, pledge an amount if you can, and follow this awesome project.
